revalidation

Well it seems like things change from weeks to week here...
The RCGP has published it "guide to revalidation" on the RCGP website. This is still a consultation document but mirros the approach we have

The GMC has rewritten Good Medical Practice for the purposes of revalidation to cover four domains

o Knowledge , skills and performance
o Safety and quality
o Communication , partnership and teamwork
o Maintaining trust

Each of these four domains has three broad criteria, giving a 12 point grid of performance criteria against which appraisee performance will be judged, based on the evidence they submit [this grid can be found on GMC website at this address http://www.gmc-uk.org/about/reform/Framework_4_3.pdf
There is a revalidation demo site which is worth a visit-
https://demo.nhsrevalidationtoolkit.org

Revalidation will include the need to undergo 360 feedback- and currently the GMC's own tool is likely to be approved for revalidation.

Appraisal and CPD

The RCGP CPD credits system is the only college system that is not based on hours of CPD and at the moment the added of costs of this make it doubtful that this will go ahead.

The key thing is to make sure you are having your annual appraisal and using the NHS appraisal toolkit whenever possible.

You should contact you local PCT appraisal team and appraisal lead to ensure you have all exisiting local guidance on appraisal issued by your PCT. You need to be pro-active about this.

North of Tyne NHS now manages its appraisal matching (between appraisees and appraisers via a website). If you havent been contacted with a pass word to enable you to do this you should contact the appraisal team

gpappraisals@northoftyne.nhs.uk
including your GMC # and which performers list you are on and ask for a password.

I recently updated appraisal contacts for the PCts on the NELg website.

You should also keep an eye on the deanery appraisal page.

The North Of Tyne Appraisal lead has recently written to practices requested that they support locums GPs in obtaining evidence for appraisal and revalidation. The following is an extract from the letter which cabe found on the appraisals page of NELG.

The following actions would be very helpful in trying to ensure that locums can place
themselves in a position to be revalidated:
1. Assisting with distribution of patient surveys and also peer/colleague feedback
surveys 'and to support them to discuss and interpret patient and colleague feedback
2. Informing locums promptly of any complaints received or significant events, which
involve them or may impact on their work at your practice
3. Facilitating access by locums to computer systems and records outside of booked
surgery times to carry out audit, if appropriate to consider providing some
admin/practice pharmacist time to help locums to set up and carry out an audit that
could be helpful for the practice as well as their own appraisal folder
The following actions would be helpful in supporting locums maintain the highest
possible standards of clinical care:
1. Informing locums of urgent Department of Health or PCT communications
2. Cascading to locums any information you have about local educational events
3. Inviting locums to participate in practice meetings relating to clinical issues and
services, education, prescribing and significant events.
