Balint groups provide a model for reflecting on our work to explore and understand our relationships with patients in all their complexity and ambiguity. Michael Balint described the doctor as the most potent drug and the aim of Balint work is to increase therapeutic effectiveness and develop self-awareness. It is a useful method in teaching and training.

Dr Manjit Suchdev will be facilitating this session.
They are groups of practitioners who meet regularly to address their shared professional development needs. Broadly this means meeting for educational purposes and also for peer support. This means benefiting from the collective educational efforts of your peers. Exploring tricky subjects which may be hard to comprehend without discussion. Groups help improve motivation for learning and also reduce Isolation. There are a number of groups in operation in the deanery.
2) This evening is an opportunity to either meet other people with who you might want to form a group or share your current experience of a group wi a view to making improvements in the way it works.

If you want to meet other people to form a new group you may wish to complete an “expression of interest” form and send it to me (pfwright@doctors.org.uk) . I will compile a list of interested people and circulate it.
Co-mentoring is a form of mentoring based on a model similar to co-counselling, where two or sometimes three people meet together on a regular basis and use protected time to ‘mentor’ one another. This involves providing good active listening, facilitatory questioning, support and challenge
An advantage of co-mentoring is that it is a reciprocal, non-hierarchical model; no money changes hands – we are giving and taking time with one another. It provides opportunities for one to one mentoring as well as meeting in a bigger group from time to time, to catch up and get new ideas from one another.
Most of us find co-mentoring helpful in a number of ways: clarifying and exploring difficulties at work; looking at ways of solving problems; discussing patients in depth; complaints; practice relationships; keeping the home/work balance healthy.
Dr Gail Young will be facilitating this session.
GP UPDATE has donated one of thei excellent course manuals to NELG.
