There are various mentoring schemes available throughout the region and details of all of these will soon be available through the nelg website on

NELG members can also access mentoring provided on a voluntary basis through other NELG members. This is coordinated by the mentoring coordinator for NELG (currently Paula Wright).
Following the success and buzz of the salaried career development day held last October a further event is planned for the spring. Please make a note of this date in your diary. We are very sad to see the departure of who has been a strong supporter of education and CPD for sessional GPs. His tenure saw the establishment of GP tutor posts specifically charged with supporting sessional GPs and their complex educational and professional needs. He has also been a supporter of events organised for sessional GPs such as the Appraisal workshop held a few years back and our most recent conference on Career Development for Salaried GPs.
He is replaced by DR Graham Rutt from the 1st of April.
The Tyne and Wear Contractor services agency has recently published guidance (with input from the deanery) for GPs returning to GP after a career break. This is also available on the NELG website.
The deanery website is undergoing a major overhaul and should have a complete new look to go with improved facilities. Its url is
http://mypimd.ncl.ac.uk/PIMD_new2
Contrary to rumours, and despite the cessation of funding for new Flexible Career Scheme posts, funding and rules for the Retainer scheme remain unchanged.
Further details can be found on
http://mypimd.ncl.ac.uk/PIMD_new2/medstaff/content?page=172&sub_page=226
And the Deanery advisor on the Retainer Scheme is Dr Paula Wright PFwright@doctors.org.uk
The BMA/GPC have finally published guidance on Fees for GP locums. This can be found on the BMA website under Sessional GPs.
The DDRB has recommended an uplift in the salaried GP range of £1000 (WTE).
