Falls in the Elderly:
Falls represent a significant public health challenge, with incidence increasing at about 2% per annum. Increased rates of falling, and the severity of the consequences, are associated with growing older and the rising rate of falls is expected to continue as the population ages.
The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the British Geriatrics Society (BGS) have released new guidelines in 2010 aimed at preventing serious and potentially deadly falls among older adults. They recommend a multi-factorial fall risk assessment for all older adults who have had a fall, who have been identified as having gait and balance problems, or who report difficulties with gait or balance.
It is not the preserve of one agency as the consequences of a fall and resultant fragility fracture cut across all local agencies working with older people. All local organisations working with older people, including statutory and voluntary service providers, are a part of the solution and must be supported to understand their contribution to reducing the number of falls locally.

risk assessment to their patients.
This workshop will give you the knowledge and skills to:
• Use current evidence based guidelines
• Understand modifiable and non modifiable risk factors
• Use risk assessment tools in practice to calculate CVD risk
• Be familiar with the investigations required for measuring
CVD risk
• Use motivational strategies to support behaviour change
• Understand the organisational structures required for
delivery of the Vascular Prevention Programme in practice
