Portfolio working

Many GPs are interested in getting involved in a range of activities but may not be aware of how to go about this. These opportunities are often advertised via practices so GPs locums and GPs new to an area may not find out easily. This page provides a starting point for enthusiastic Gps wishing to take on new roles. There are NELG members who are GP locums and working as GP tutors, VTS course organisers, appraisers, medical student tutors etc.

Medical student teaching

There are a variety of ways of getting involved in medical student teaching from small group tutorials at the medical school to clinical teaching in practices (which can be done by partners, salaried Gps or long term locums with a regular connection to a practice).

Small Group Work
Topics covered include ‘Gathering Information’, ‘Valuing Diversity’, ‘Critical Appraisal of Pharmaceutical Literature’, ‘Problem Solving’, ‘Giving an Explanation’ and ‘Putting the Patient First’ (which concerns patient safety and medical error). There are detailed tutors’ notes for each session, and sometimes also briefing meetings, for example for new sessions and advice on small group teaching techniques. Tutors can volunteer to do as many or as few sessions as they wish. Currently the rate of pay for clinicians is £180.25 for a two hour session.
contact Dr Phil Diggle, Teaching Co-Ordinator (Tel: (0191) 222 5438 or e-mail Phil.Diggle@ncl.ac.uk).

Teaching in practices
The main opportunities are to teach 3rd and 5th year students. Third year students attend practices generally in groups of four for a morning a week over the whole year. Their teaching is quite structured and linked to their current hospital speciality. Final years attend every day for three weeks and as there is only one in each practice, they get a lot of attention and appreciate the opportunity to revise and improve their consultation skills. Teaching students in this environment is a practice committment, but it requires one GP to organise the attachment and provide the majority of teaching. This could be done by a salaried GP or a locum doing regular sessions in one practice and prove to be an interesting change from doing surgeries. It could be used by a practice to fund an extra session of GP time. Payments for 1997 are: teaching 3rd yrs £8610pa and 5th yrs £2250 for 3 weeks

GP appraiser

PCT are required to have GP appraisers from a variety of backgrounds and this includes GPs who work as a salaried GPas and locums as well as GP partners. Many PCTs have trained full complement of appraisers but some are still short of appraisers. They all have their own recruitment mechanisms and the best way to find out about opportunities is to contact the clinical governance lead or appraisal lead for the PCT. Appraisal payments vary but range from £320-£500 in PCT in the northern region.
