Appraisal and Revalidation

All GPs are required to undergo annual appraisal. National agreements between the Department of Health and the BMA have secured funding to ensure this occurs in protected time for all GPs whether partners, salaried or locums.

The original Department of Health guidance and forms can be downloaded from here:

ATTENTION CALLING ALL SESSIONAL GPS- Revalidation Pilot focusing on sessional GPs running in northern deanery from oct 09 to April 2010

There is some concern that sessional GPs (especially locums and OOH GPs) and isolated rural GPs may struggle to meet the evidence requirements of revalidation. The Royal College of GPs is funding a research project in the Northern deanery to look into this. Can you help ?

Participants would be asked to attend 2 focus groups approximately 3 months apart to discuss their views and experiences on evidence collection. They would also be asked to try and collect one or 2 of 3 kinds of evidence and report back on the difficulties they experienced. (The 4 kinds would be audit, significant events analysis, combined multisource feedback and patient surveys).

Focus group meetings over a wide area. The team is also interested in coming out to run a focus group with any self-directed learning groups of sessional GPs.

The first focus groups have been arranged in Newcastle for the following dates –all 7-9 pm at
the northern deanery 10-12 Framlington place NE24AB Room G2

Thursday 15th October
Wednesday 21st October
Tuesday 27th October
Monday 2nd November
Wednesday 11th November
Tuesday 17th November

Further information about this project (FAQs) will be available from the northern deanery website from the 12th of October 2009.

Why take part ? Some benefits
There is funding from the project for helping you purchase one of the commercial packages of patient surveys and multisource feedback, but no other funding for participants.

Participating in the pilot is a real opportunity to shape and influence the final revalidation format to ensure it is suitable for all GPs.
